Covenant Woods

Mechanicsville, Virginia

The Richmond area’s natural choice for an active retirement community, Covenant Woods( is nestled on more than 90 acres in Hanover County, Virginia.  Designed for choice and engagement, Covenant Woods delivers a different kind of retirement living, combining over 26 apartment and cottage floor plans, wooded and open green spaces, and extraordinary amenities. Residents enjoy first-class dining, hospitality and health services, and innovative programming – all under one roof. Established in 1883, Covenant Woods is an accredited, not-for-profit, Life Plan (Continuing Care Retirement Community) whose goal is promoting living life to the fullest for residents.

Salt Water Pool and Spa

Why did we choose Covenant Woods?  Mostly, it was our daughter who encouraged us to be close since I had had two strokes prior to coming to Covenant Woods.  Both strokes occurred in Florida; the burden for the family was great.  We didn’t want to burden our children going forward.  We took a year and did our homework by visiting seven CCRCs from Annapolis, Maryland to Kissimmee, Florida. Now we live 10 minutes away from our daughter; my son is three hours away in Baltimore.  Although my husband was hesitant and reluctant at first, he knew it was something important to our family.

In December 2017, my husband Rick and I moved into Covenant Woods.  Having moved from Orlando, Florida, the weather was a shock. But the heated, indoor salt water pool has helped with the adjustment.  We quickly realized that we had very few winter clothes and Rick was used to wearing shorts all year round.  Thank goodness for our children who immediately took us to stores to purchase warm winter jackets, pants and sweaters.

Now, almost 3 years have passed.  Rick is a regular at playing both Snooker and Pool, enjoys Wednesday Breakfast with the Guys, and listening to College Professors in Great Decisions.  On the other hand, I am very involved in VaCCRA, Residents’ Council as Chair of the IT committee, helping at the Farm to Table Resident Garden (last picture), and playing bridge and Mahjong.

Even through the Covid quarantine, Rick and I are safe, happy, grateful and fulfilled at Covenant Woods.
